Denton Arts & Jazz Festival

Why: The Denton Arts and Jazz Festival is a celebration of the arts in a community known for embracing and nurturing music, dance, drama and the visual arts. Held the last full weekend in April at Denton’s Quakertown Park, the event features 7 stages of continuous professional and community music, fine art, crafts, and food, games and information booths in a beautiful setting.

What: Dallas Cowboys NFL Draft Day Party

Why: Join in the excitement of NFL Draft Day as the Dallas Cowboys and Miller Lite host 3 days of festivities at The Star in Frisco. Meet Cowboys players and celebrities, team mascot Rowdy and Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. Watch a live feed of the NFL Draft and see audition finals for the Dallas Cowboys Rhythm & Blue Dancers. Kids can visit the Kids Zone with games and fun activities. On Saturday, the inaugural Dallas Cowboys Draft Day 5K is set to begin at 10 a.m.  Guests at all events will hear exclusive NFL Draft insight from the “War Room” and listen to live commentary from 105.3 The Fan. Free admission and parking each day. Tours of The Star will be available during all Draft Party events (ticket required).

What: Dallas Festival of Ideas/ Dallas Book Festival

Why: Equity is the theme for the 3rd annual Dallas Festival of Ideas, a partnership between the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture and The Dallas Morning News. This year, the Festival has partnered with the Dallas Book Festival. Events will be held at City Hall Plaza and the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library in Dallas. The free, day-long festival on April 29 features Yaa Gyasi (the novel Homegoing) and Andrew Solomon (The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression). 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. — Free concert by The Polyphonic Spree on City Hall Plaza: Grab something good from the food trucks, concessions, and beer garden to enjoy during the concert or over conversations about the day’s events.

What: Wheels of Hope Car Show

Why: Don’t miss the area’s most unique car show for a cause. All proceeds benefit the Hope Clinic — a nonprofit offering medical services to those suffering financial hardships. Boasting 25 competition categories from antique to modern cars and trucks, the 3rd annual Wheels of Hope also offers food, fun, fellowship and a pristine parking location: the famous Downtown Garland Square. Competitors and car enthusiasts alike can enjoy mariachi and steel drum band entertainment during the show, as well as a headline performance by Chaz Marie-Hope and Robert Miller. Garland ISD students will also impress attendees with auto-themed artwork, including painted hoods and gas tanks. Bringing children? Be sure to stop by the face painting and hub cap painting areas.

What: Jubilee of Cultures 2017

Why: Family festival celebrates the diversity and multiculturalism of North Texas with live presentations, music, ethnic foods, art, and a special recognition of Veterans.

What: International Tabletop Day 2017

What: Get Kidz Fit Festival

Why: Get ready for fun and excitement at the 10th Annual Get Kidz Fit festival at Fair Park. It’s a free, fun-filled wellness and nutrition expo designed to engage kids in healthy lifestyles. Kids will enjoy a series of exciting games and activities, interactive and hands-on demonstrations, numerous sports, obstacle courses, and inflatables, plus high-energy performances at the Main Stage dance party. Parents will receive information on fighting childhood obesity, creating healthy habits, nutrition, food and cooking demos, activity booths, and more. Have your kids take a break from “screen time” and get more involved in fitness. Free T-shirts for the first 500 kids. Free admission. Free parking.  Presented by Dallas Area Coalition to Prevent Childhood Obesity, Dallas Mayor’s Youth Fitness Initiative (MyFi) and the Community Council of Greater Dallas.

What: Tune, Tails and Ales- Murphy Craft Beer Fest

Why: Festival includes live music, crawfish boil, food trucks, activities for the kids and a craft beer garden featuring 150+ beers. Music starts at 1 p.m. with party band Le Freak taking the stage at 6:30 p.m. Admission to the concert and kids’ area is free. General Admission to the craft beer event for 21+ includes sampling card with 12 2oz samples and a commemorative tasting cup.

What: Fortress Festival: Run the Jewels/ Purity Ring/ Flying Lotus/ Slowdive

Why: New, two-day music festival is set in the midst of Fort Worth’s cultural district. Headliners include Run The Jewels and Purity Ring. Also set to perform are Flying Lotus, Slowdive, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, SURVIVE and Whitney, in addition to performers like Peter Hook & The Light (of Joy Division and New Order), Houndmouth, Wolf Parade, Dengue Fever and more. Up-and-coming acts from the D-FW area will also perform, including Fort Worth’s Burning Hotels and Quaker City Night Hawks. The festival will feature two outdoor stages – one at the Will Rogers Memorial Center, another at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Ticket price includes free access to The Modern.

What: Alton Brown Live: Eat Your Science

Why: The follow-up to the Edible Inevitable tour, fans can expect more comedy, more antics, multimedia presentations, and music with Alton Brown Live: Eat Your Science. For this tour, however, Brown is adding in a slew of fresh – and unexpected – ingredients including puppets, songs, and bigger (and more dangerous) experiments. With his knack for mixing together science, music, and food, this show will be two hours of pure entertainment. Brown is a James Beard Award winner and author, as well as host of the popular Food Network series Good Eats for 13 years. He has also hosted several other series for the network, including Cutthroat KitchenIron Chef America, and The Next Food Network Star. His new book, EveryDayCook, will be released in the fall of 2016.

What: Super Hero Night on the Square

Why: Join us for a special mission at the 2nd Annual Super Hero Night on the Square in downtown Celina. The fun begins with family-friendly activities including tug-o-war, obstacle courses, fitness challenges, bounce houses, costume contest, themed music, free hot dogs and more. You may also see a few familiar masks and capes, and everyone is encouraged to dress as their favorite hero. Activities wrap up at 7:30 p.m. and then all are invited to enjoy an outdoor showing of The Avengers (PG-13). The event is FREE.

What: Extreme Racing

Why: Extreme racing returns to Lone Star Park. In addition to watching/wagering on Thoroughbreds, you can also see Camel, Ostrich and Zebra races, and “bet” on them for charity. Plus, there will be a Meet & Greet with the Extreme jockeys, and the Family Fun Park is open with bounce houses and other fun activities.

What: Jared’s Epic Nerf Battle 2

Why: Bring your own Nerf weapon and ammo and take part in an Nerf battle on the field with bunkers, barricades, Nerf toys and more. Your tickets includes a self-guided tour of the stadium. Eye protection required for 17 and under and is recommended for all ages.

Why: The annual Dog Bowl at the Cotton Bowl is a day of free unleashed fun for dog lovers, pups and pooches of all sizes. The Cotton Bowl field transforms into a super-sized pooch park with splash pools, an agility course, contests, live entertainment, vendors, and local dog rescue groups.

What: The 6th Annual Cowtown Conjunto Festival
When: Sun. Apr. 30th @ 1:00PM

Why: The festival has become more than just another concert, but one that has grown in popularity in the community with a rich and passionate culture. Reviews from prior years have been all positive and everyone from the attendees, musical artists, vendors, and staff are raving as to how amazing the 6th Annual Cowtown Conjunto will be. Featuring Dwayne Verheyden, Da Krazy Pimpz, Los Badd Boyz Del Valle, Elias Arredondo, Conjunto Prestigio, Grupo Pression, Squeeze Box Bandits, Sonido Próximo and Conjunto Cats.
