What: Commemorative Air Force presents “Rise Above: Red Tail”

Why: The Commemorative Air Force will bring its “Rise Above: Red Tail” Traveling Exhibit back to Dallas for a free Black History Month program. The CAF is partnering with area schools, churches and civic groups to offer a free field trip which provides students with an opportunity to learn about the Tuskegee Airmen, America’s first African-American Military Pilots, and how the Airmen overcame segregation and adversity to become some of America’s best pilots in World War II. The exhibit features a unique large-format curved screen theater which allows students to experience a 30-minute Rise Above film in an interactive setting. The film covers the topic of civil rights and the uphill struggle for equality as it pertains to this important piece of history. It also gives viewers an exciting feeling of flying in a rebuilt P-51 Mustang.

Meet and interact with an eye-popping collection of giant life- like dinosaurs puppets presented in an entertaining and educational live theatrical performance created by Erth Visual & Physical of Sydney, Australia.

Why: Popular young adult writer Rachel Caine headlines the 16th ConDFW Conference, a literary science-fiction and fantasy convention. Caine leads the way for a host of national and local authors and artists from the literary world of science fiction and fantasy. Exhibitors will fill the hall with books, both new and rare, collectibles, comics, original art, toys, games, and more. Authors will take part in a multitude of panel talks and programming events throughout the weekend. Notable events include Q&A and signings, charity book swap, and a large table-top gaming area. First is a 2 hour writer’s workshop focused on taking a novel from idea to the hands of readers. Second, is an exciting one-on-one tutorial on how to pitch your novel.

Why: The Comedy Get Down, featuring comedic legends Cedric The Entertainer, Eddie Griffin, D.L. Hughley, George Lopez, and Charlie Murphy, returns to Dallas for another hilarious night.

This genre-bending, fourth-wall-smashing musical sensation, with a pulsing score and electrifying performances, tells the story of one of the most unique characters to ever hit the stage. “Internationally ignored song stylist” Hedwig Robinson is out to set the record straight about her life, her loves, and the botched operation that left her with that “angry inch.”

Why: Kicking off the new year is a bright, newly revitalized staging of the Theatre Too staple I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change by Joe DiPietro and Jimmy Roberts. Now in its 17th year, this annual production will receive an all-new staging by director B.J. Cleveland. The show, presented as a series of vignettes, is a musical revue about all of love’s greatest challenges: dating, sex, marriage, and family life. Valentine’s Weekend shows include flowers, chocolate, and champagne.

Why: Discover amazing gadgets and gizmos throughout the Museum, as we explore the world of inventing, making and engineering. Build your own inventions, create your own circuits, program robots, and even see how a 3D printer works. Discover the fun of science together with your whole family on the second Saturday of each month! Try out real experiments, design and build new creations, and check out dynamic performances each month with guest scientists, educators and artists.

Why: Buck Rogers in the 25th Century stars Gil Gerard and Erin Gray join the celebrity lineup at this family-friendly event featuring exciting comic book and media guests, costumed characters, gaming and Anime.  Also scheduled to appear are Kathy Najimy (King of the Hill), Helen Slater (Supergirl), Phil Jimenez (DC Rebirth, Superwoman), Howard Chaykin (Star Wars), Alexis Cruz (Stargate, Stargate SG-1) and others.

Why: Little D is holding a Valentine’s Market where there will be more than 25 local vendors selling jewelry, clothing, paper crafts, bouquets, artwork, sweet treats, and other handmade goods. There will also be Valentine’s themed workshops on card making, chocolate + champagne tasting by CocoAndre Chocolatier, and flower crown & boutonniere making. Also, to promote shopping local, Little D will be giving away free giveaways to the first 10 customers who spend $25 or more.

What: NorthPark Center presents ArtROCKS! featuring Keith Haring

Why: Bring out your children’s artistic talents at a special Valentine’s-themed ArtROCKS! inspired by the work of Keith Haring, an American artist known for his bold and vibrant pop-graffiti art reflective of 1980s street culture. Children can create their own masterpieces with Sour Grapes, the Dallas-based graffiti collective, and other local artists, dance along to tunes from DJ Jose G and experience the colorful Frank Gehry Left Twist Cubes provided by Design Within Reach.
