Techweek Dallas will feature Alexis Ohanian, cofounder of Reddit, as a headline speaker. Why: During this election season, spending a day in the garden is a day well spent to relax and to forget about politics. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden welcomes guests to come out and hear the great words of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin and other famous contributors during the last month of Gary Lee Price’s Great Contributors Bronze Statues Exhibit, on display through November 27. The life-size bronze sculptures are sitting on benches placed among the spectacular fall color throughout the garden. Autumn is the perfect time of year for a picnic in the gardens or a leisurely walk among thousands of fall-blooming flowers. Local celebrities, including news personalities, will recite Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” and George Washington’s “Farewell Address in 1796” throughout the garden at 10 am and 1 pm daily.

Why: With politicians skewered right and left, including a Vice President who wanders the White House unrecognized by his own staff, Of Thee I Sing is a hilarious and timeless send-up of national institutions that is as relevant as ever. The extensive hit-filled score makes Of Thee I Singone of George and Ira Gershwin’s finest creations and their longest running musical during George Gershwin’s lifetime. Of Thee I Sing will be Lyric Stage’s first Gershwin musical. This all-American political satire focuses on the election campaign and Presidency of John P. Wintergreen, whose party, lacking a viable platform, runs on “love,” promising that if elected he will marry the winner of an Atlantic City beauty pageant. When he falls for Mary Turner, a campaign secretary who bakes a mean corn muffin, instead of Diana Deveraux, the fairest flower of the South and winner of the pageant, trouble begins.

This show takes place under their majestic white and blue big top tent which came all the way from Italy. Inside, they have such a theatrical and intimate setup, you just might forget you are under a circus tent.

Komen 3-Day is a three day, 60 mile walk to raise funds for Komen’s breast cancer research programs, community health and advocacy, global partnerships, education screening, diagnosis and treatment assistance programs and patient navigation services. Participants walk 20 miles a day, staying overnight at a campsite while sleeping in a pink tent city with over 1,000 walkers and crew while raising funds and awareness for breast cancer in the DFW area. Why: Crescent Court will present a monthly farmers market to continue its initiative to enhance Uptown’s growing, pedestrian-friendly environment. The Crescent Court Farmers Market Grand Opening will have vendors offering locally sourced produce, artisanal foods and hand-crafted items exclusive to the market. Each market will offer a seasonal feature. To celebrate the harvest season, the grand opening will feature a pumpkin patch sponsored by Rubial’s along with an onsite photographer. Live music performed by Blake Burrow is scheduled from 11 am until 1 pm. Proceeds from the grand opening are being donated to the American Red Cross. Following the Grand Opening, subsequent markets are scheduled for the first Saturday of each month, beginning November 5.

Why: The Ultimate Cocktail Experience, benefiting Trigger’s Toy, is a charitable pop-up event that brings together bartenders, brands, distributors and consumers to benefit a worthwhile cause. The cocktail showcase and fundraiser provides attendees with craft cocktails from the most talented bartenders across the state, and more importantly, it reduces financial and emotional stress on chronically ill children and their families by providing financial assistance and supplemental programming. The theme of this year’s event is Cocktails from Around the World and will feature five pop-up bars. Each bar will represent a different geographic region – Asia, South America, Africa, Europe and North America – with accompanying décor and drinks.
