Why: The City of Denton hosts the 47th annual Denton Juneteenth celebration, a commemoration of the end of slavery in America. The two-day celebration includes a Friday night gospel concert, a community parade on Saturday morning from the Civic Center to Fred Moore Park. Saturday activities also include a softball and 3v3 basketball tournament, games, contests, DJs, vendors and more.

Martin has appeared in movies as an actor, most recently in Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion and most lengthily in Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock. Festival fun starts at 11 a.m. with live entertainment; R&B, hip hop and jazz concerts; an “Empowering You” event; and Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant. There will also be a car show, kids zone, BBQ cook-off, carnival and midway, food vendors, rodeo, basketball, and youth art show.
